Lovely Blue is now 8 years of age and has been in this home for 4 years. He is the family dog and has been much loved travelling on many holidays to Ireland and around England with them.
His owners explain that he now has severe arthritis according to recent scans. He is not responding to a range of medications (Rycarfa, Librela), with the pain in particular in his left wrist. The pain is not constant but seems to be apparent at different points in the day. He walks with a slight limp now, having been a very active dog all of his life.
He came to us with a history of behaviour (having had at least 3 previous owners) One home he left due to behaviour, one because he was not a good ‘hunting’ dog, and one the family went back to work after lockdown and so gave him up. We have worked hard to address this, employing a dog behaviourist as soon as we got him, who works with dogs at the Met police. She taught us strategies to manage him and in the main this was successful, although when in a park we managed to avoid other dogs through activities around ball retrieval. This meant he could still run and not get involved with other dogs and enjoy the activities he was used to.
He also is very attached to me and we cannot have our young one and two year old grandchildren at the house as Blue barks incessantly while they are here. We have had TESSIE prescribed by a specialist vet, to sedate him at these times, and this makes him a bit drowsy. He seems to bond with one person easily (me, in this case, as I walk him mainly and feed him mainly). He has been in dog kennels while we have taken holidays and the staff there loved him, so we know he can be good company for the right person/people.
When Blue is left at home he is happy to snooze on his bed for a few hours after exercise, he has a bed in the kitchen where he looks out at the garden through full glass doors. He has another bed in the hallway, at the bottom of the stairs near the front door. He is an excellent guard dog and will bark if he hears noise on the property.
Blue was used to going for walks with a dog walker but his owners haven’t needed to continue this since their retirement. He has a very good recall to both his name and a human whistle unless he’s sniffing another dog.
Around other dogs his owners manage him with ball games because they aren’t sure of his reactions with some dogs. He does try to catch the cats that venture into his garden but he hasn’t managed to catch one yet. He hasn’t been around livestock in this home so his reactions are unknown.
Around the children he is no threat but does bark constantly while they are visiting and has done since he was diagnosed with arthritis. He is much happier with older children whose body language is more predictable.
He is neutered and vaccinated and both his worm and flea treatments are up to date.
Lovely Blue is currently in the London area and will be rehomed with his 5 weeks free Agria Insurance and his Adoption Contract.
