Brother and sister Fenrir (Fen) and Freya are 7 years old their owner has sadly had a change in circumstances with her health which means she feels that she’s struggling to meet their needs, they are totally unaware but she’s feeling very guilty and stressed because of this. She explains that they haven’t done anything wrong, they are typical GSPs, loving, super cuddly who need their people, but Fen especially needs more structure and training than she’s well enough to give him.
Their owner had the pair at 10 weeks of age and they have never been apart, she works from home so they are used to having her around all day too. She admits that they weren’t the easiest of puppies but were both total cuddle monsters, which hasn’t changed. She has done some basic training with the pair and worked with a GSP specific trainer when they were small, they have never needed to work on their recall because they have their own field with constant access where they have always been exercised and where they love to play ball games and chase each other around, along with spending time plodding around the field and snoozing in the sunshine on lovely days.
They haven’t routinely been walked so this would need time and patience until they understood what was wanted of them on walks. They have regularly gone to a local daycare since they were youngsters and have never had any issues with people or dogs. They have also been kennelled without issue, they are not overly happy in kennels but they weren’t a problem.
Freya has recently been diagnosed with suspected arthritis so is on a course of Loxicom to ease the pain which worked well.
Over their 7 years together they have had the very occasional argument, mostly as puppies, nothing nasty causing any wounds just a lot of noise. They have a few arguments lately but this was before Freya’s pain was diagnosed, since she’s been on the Loxicom there hasn’t been a problem and it’s back to a happy, loving relationship again.
They can be left in the house for about 4-5 hours, they have never destroyed anything and being monitored on a camera it’s shown that they sleep on the sofa for 90% of the time, but love lots of fuss and attention when you get home.
Fen and Freya are both around 30kg and a similar size.
Fen loves to play with their soft toys especially the long ones that he can drag around, he also loves playing with two tennis balls at the same time and will play all day if allowed. Chin scratches are one of his most favourite things along with fresh kitchen drinking water and Fen will ask when he thinks he needs his refreshed. He does have some big emotions his owner says and will bark if overstimulated, he’s not keen on thunderstorms or the neighbours guns going off and comes inside to a quiet place to get away. If he is overstimulated he expresses this with barking and needs redirection to his bed followed by a sit command, or to be let outside to run. New people in the house can cause this so often if people are over the greeting is done outside which works well, he tends to get over excited when his owner is around because when family members have arrived and she wasn’t there he was much calmer.
Fen is also a huge fan of sitting on your lap, he is quite happy and will sit comfortably while you have your breakfast every morning. He is an incredibly loyal loving dog, who wants to spend all his time with his people. He would benefit from some further training and some structure, he is smart and food orientated, but can be a bit tricky to engage if he doesn’t want to.
Freya loves tennis balls, she will also play fetch all day. She can be extremely playful with people and loves the interactions. She favours smaller soft toys and will bring these to you when she wants to play. She loves a game of “find it” where she brings you a tennis ball and you hide it somewhere on you, or somewhere close by and she sniffs it out. She also likes “bring it” where you can point to a toy and she can bring it to you, she has to be in the right mood for bring it otherwise she will try and “find it” because she wants to be playing with a tennis ball. She loves a cuddle, and loves being underneath a blanket, she will ask to have the blanket lifted by gently digging at itso she can get underneath it. She also enjoys “fresh kitchen water” and will wait for you to provide fresh water if she feels it’s not good enough or hasn’t seen you refill it – despite this she often drinks disgusting water outside.
Freya can be an anxious soul, if there are too many people around she will take herself off somewhere quiet for some peace. As a puppy it took her a while to settle and relax, it was probably a couple of months before her playful side came out. She can also be a bit scared with loud noises.
She will ask to go outside by scratching at the door to the kitchen, she will go back inside when directed if someone comes to gate. Given the opportunity she 100% will counter surf so no food is left out. She can be the ring leader with this and will manage to take things Fen can’t, and will then share with him.
Freya is an incredibly loving and affection dog and will check in to see how you are doing. She is very intelligent and eager to please, she picks up new things quickly.
She has always lived with Fen, they get on very well. They play well together and interactions are calm and relaxed. Fen sometimes pushes the boundaries and Freya will signal that she is not comfortable and he will stop eg. if Freya is settled and wanting to sleep, she sometimes doesn’t like Fen too close and will growl at him, he listens to this and respects her. When they have breakfast and dinner they are always supervised as Fen eats alot quicker and occasionally tries to help himself to Freya’s.
Freya is fine around other dogs and gets on with most, Fen does not like Jack Russell type dogs but otherwise no issues, he also seems to get on well with other dogs.
Both at are untested around cats so they won’t be rehomed with one.
Around livestock they are also untested on farm type livestock (sheep etc). Fen HATES pheasants and WILL chase them. They have also caught a pigeon in the past in their field.
They have no real experience around children of any ages so we won’t be Rehoming them with resident young children.
They are both good travellers and will settle one on the back seat and one in the rear of the car especially since Freya started showing signs of pain in her shoulder, they are both neutered and vaccinated, they are fed on Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin, Naturo wet food, and also take Yumove, Yucalm, Plaqueoff supplements.
