Lionel

Origin: UK / Age: 3 Years

Lovely 3 year old Lionel is again looking for a new loving home and it’s quite urgent .
Lionel was adopted in April after his original adopter had a change in personal circumstances. He’s been doing well in his new home in so many ways but there have been a few incidents- one involving a cat, and some ongoing unpredictability with some other dogs. Unfortunately, his adopter works on a farm and at stables, where the cat was injured and there are other cats (including new kittens, which are the owner’s children’s pets). There has also recently been an out of character incident with the farm owner’s female Border Collie. Yes there are ways this could perhaps be managed but it’s a very difficult situation, which would need him to be muzzled most of the day. His adopter’s work makes it difficult to have him on lead at the workplace and leaving him at home is not possible.
Lionel has mostly been great with other dogs, but he can be unpredictable. In his current home he’s happily been around lots of different dogs, of a variety of breeds (female Labrador, Boxer and Dachshund, plus a male spaniel and terriers). All fine. He’s also met a few male GSPs in the past few months and loved playing. But there has been an incident with an unneutered male Labrador, that resulted in the Lab having a puncture wound (there have been a few incidents with unneutered male Labs in his previous homes). There has also been the attack on the female Border Collie, which happened after she run through a fence towards him and his adopter. He then chased her and injured her. In his original adopter’s home he was also brilliant with the male spaniel and another foster spaniel, as well as numerous other dogs. He’s had a lot of change in the past few months, so he could still be unsettled and with stability and ongoing training, this unpredictability could improve. He may actually benefit from living with a calm, neutered female, since he enjoys company. But mostly he needs a home where he doesn’t have to be around lots of unknown dogs, and where his walks can be managed so that interactions with other dogs, especially with other male, unneutered dogs, can be managed carefully, or just avoided. Plus an environment with no cats.
Lionel has great recall and is trained to the whistle (though his recall failed when he chased the BC). He has done some gundog type training and had lots of general training from a young age. He loves toys and interactive games and play. He also did some early canicross activity when he was young and could be a great running dog. He’s full of energy but he’s also very happy relaxing at home, as long as he has his human with him. He’s a big cwtcher and loves a cuddlle on the settee.
Lionel is great with children of all ages, having been around youngsters since he was a puppy. He is of course boisterous and playful, so can bump small children over. He is also fantastic around livestock, especially horses. He chases cats though and if he catches one, he causes harm. So he cannot be rehomed with cats.
Lionel has some separation anxiety. When left with another dog it’s much better and he can be left a few hours, but when left alone, he gets distressed. He travels well in the car, though sometimes whines at the start of a journey. He doesn’t like being left in the car alone.
Lionel is a healthy boy. He is currently on a chemical castration implant to check how his behaviour is. He can lack confidence at times, so this allowed his adopter to check that he didn’t become more anxious. She now thinks he’d be fine to be neutered, once his implant expires.
If you feel you could give Lionel what he needs – ongoing training and stability, then please email us on gsprescueuk@gmail.com (even if we already have your form). He is currently in Warwickshire.
He will be rehomed with 5 weeks free Agria insurance and under our rescue contract.
