Max (3)

Origin: UK / Age: 12

Feb 2026

This gorgeous lad is 12 next month and needs to move to a new home by the end of the month. He was retired from a working home aged 8 years before moving to this home 4 years ago. He is very sadly looking for a new home due to a change in personal circumstances and an allergy with a family member. He would love a home with other dogs for company and games and humans who can be around for affection and treat giving.
The owners say that Max is the sweetest, loveliest, gentle giant at 38kg, he loves cuddles, being around his humans and playing fetch with a ball.
Max can only have specific rubber balls and black kongs. Max doesn’t chew anything in the house, he will only chew items that are given to him. We have left food out in the area he lives in and our personal items, he has never eaten or chewed anything he isn’t supposed to (except two occasions where he has chewed rolls of celotape, not sure why but sems to be the only thing!).
He loves going to the beach. We find it amusing how he can play for hours in the North sea but when it comes to clean house water in the bath he looks sad (he is no problem to clean in the bath as he is a very compliant dog, we personally find it amusing.)
He is adored by the vets. Whenever we have taken him in, they can move him, roll him over, and check him, and he is very placid and loving; all the staff coo over him.
We walk him twice a day(sometimes 3), one walk in the morning and one in the evening, he is an active dog but if he is walked and every couple of days he gets a good leg stretch with the ball being thrown he is very calm and sleeps a lot. (He is at a golden age and stage, loves walks but isn’t zooming round the house. He does not look or act 11!) He walks very well on a lead, he doesn’t pull on the lead, he will stop to sniff all the smells, he is two-thirds my body weight (prior to pregnancy!) and has never pulled me, is good by roads and walks to heal.
He is house trained and will absolutely not go in the house, if he needs the toilet outside of his usual morning and evening walks, he will tell you. If you are around him, he will stare at you until he gets your attention and will then either go and sit by the door you usually take him out of and will then look at where his lead is kept, back to the door, then at you, he will repeat this until you take him. If he needs water, he will go and sit by his water bowl.
He just loves to be around people. He will lay down quietly wherever you are and is not a bother.
Max has never lived with children but has been lovely with the children he’s met out on walks, he’s great with other dogs, but on two occasions he has picked up a tiny dog and put it back down with no damage, while being fine with a family members small dog. He hasn’t had any introductions to cats or livestock in the 4 years he’s been in this home. He can be left for several hours after exercise in the living room, with the radio on and lots of toys.
Out on walks he is well behaved if you do not let him go adventuring too far. He walks to heel but needs constant reminders as he likes to go follow scents and adventure. He does come back when called, sometimes delayed by a quick pee but always comes back.
Where we walk him we usually have large open fields where we let him run around, usually alone.
He is a classic GSP, well trained, loving and loves an adventure. He is trained to beat birds, especially peasants and retrieve them. We have not seen him in action doing this, we have seen him point when there are pheasants and go chase/beat them out)
He’s good with his commands Sit, stay, leave, heel, Max (for recall) and leave it.
If you say ‘Gentle’ he will do things more gently/slowly. Taking a treat or coming down stairs from a bath.
Drop it. When you say drop it with his ball or a stick, he will chew it excitedly a few times and then drop it (that is when he is playing and excited).
Food, we make him sit, put his food down and he will sit and not go to it until you say ‘Go to’, (he will sit and drool all over the floor while he waits! But won’t move.) He travels brilliantly and is a happy healthy boy.
If you feel you could offer this really sweet boy a loving home please contact us.
Max is currently in the County Durham area and will be rehomed with his 5 weeks free Agria Insurance and his Adoption Contract.
