Shelby is a very lovable 4 year old whose owners took him on at 14 months from a gamekeeper who wanted him gone because he wouldn’t retrieve and he was kennelled with a Labrador male who didn’t like the youngster.
The family now have to find him a new home with a change in their living circumstances and health issues in the family which means he can’t get the exercise that he enjoys.
Shelby has been amazing with their young children and considers himself a tiny lapdog, he’s been living with their 7 year old male Labrador and has been very respectful to him and even relies on him to boost his confidence in certain circumstances.
He is a very clever lad and quickly learned how to open doors so the family have had to turn the handles upside down to fox him. He can also open draws in the hunt for snacks and can open the back door if the key is left in the lock.
The cats that live next door to Shelby like to wind him up hanging around on the fence and coming into his garden, he would definitely give chase given the opportunity so we won’t be looking for a home with a resident cat.
He does love a good bark and will often bark at the slightest thing, luckily the neighbours don’t mind this because they think he makes an excellent deterrent to anyone hanging around who shouldn’t be.
Occasionally out on a walk he has been frightened by men coming towards him and in his first home had been known to snap at aggressive behaviour directed towards him.
He is a vocal boy and will happily hold a conversation with you with lots of grumble and growl type noises but he’s never been aggressive to the family and if he was to bite during a rough and tumble game he has a good bite inhibition and stops himself quickly.
He can be left for several hours after his needs have been met, but on times has caused some disruption.
He has had some gundog training and was introduced to livestock at a very young age, he was whistle trained. He’s good around other dogs but gets easily distracted playing so his recall needs work, he’s currently walked on a harness and is fine, he’s a brilliant traveler and loves going on big adventures with his family.
