Tiersen

Origin: UK / Age: 14 Years

October 2024

We have been asked if we can help this much loved 14 year old golden oldie named Tiersen. Very sadly his dad who was his primary caregiver was taken ill several months ago and is now living in a care home. His mum has been juggling commitments and finding family, friends and professionals to look after Tiersen while she is at work. This has gone on for several months and the stress is also taking a toll on her because it has been increasingly difficult to find consistent and reliable care for Tiersen, particularly when she is working away as she does some weekends.
Poor Tiersen does struggle with separation anxiety like many dogs in their later years and if he can’t see you he will bark so that you can find him and know he’s looking for you. It is very worrying for his mum if, as happened recently, whilst she was away, a carer is unable to have him at short notice and he is left to panic until a neighbour can call in.
Tiersen may be 14 but he is still very active and thoroughly enjoys his one hour a day walk. He still loves a good run on the beach followed by a walk on the promenade even in the most blustery of conditions.
He also loves visiting his dad at the care home, it’s the highlight of both their days. Tiersen then snuggles up to sleep after a busy day.
Tiersen’s eyesight and hearing aren’t as good as they used to be but if he feels like he’s lost you on a walk he will stand still and bark to let you know where he is and that he’s looking for you.
The thought of finding a new home for precious Tiersen is heartbreaking for his mum but she’s running out of carers to look after this lovely lad so we are wondering if there is anyone in the Swansea area that could help by looking after this sweet lad when his mum is working away.
Tiersen is used to being walked by a dog walker twice a week and he gets very excited when it’s time to go with them, he’s just happy being out and about. He’s even climbed Pen Y Fan mountain in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons) which is the highest peak in South Wales back in March. After his walk he generally sleeps all day. He can hold his wee very well though and will ask to go out when he needs to, by going to the door or going up to his mum to get her attention.
Tiersen is friendly towards other dogs and will happily greet them with a waggy tail for a sniff and move on. He can give a growl if a young entire male is bouncing on him or trying to mount him, he gives large scary looking dogs a wide berth and can be over-interested in bitches on heat and so has to be removed from the scene.
Tiersen lived with his own cat very amicably for 12 years until the cat died. He can want to chase other cats when out of the house.
If he encountered livestock when out on a walk he does his best to avoid them and has been known to run away from sheep!
He is familiar with the neighbour’s 15 month old little one and the 7 year old who is calm and quiet around animals. He’s also really good around the family who ‘borrow’ him from time to time who have a toddler and children 4 and 9 who also both adore him. The family’s own children were 9 - 18years when he arrived as a puppy and he’s been amazing with them and loves them dearly.
Tiersen suffers with an allergy to something unknown during the summer months which causes him to scratch and bite himself if not treated. He is prescribed apoquel which he has May – September, 2 tablets daily, tailing off to once daily and now every other day for the next week or so. This seems to control the issue.
Tiersen can be fussy about treats, he will only eat gravy bones or little marrow bone biscuits.
Tiersen hasn’t stayed in kennels however he has been left overnight with his week-day dog carer, with a house sitter and with various friends who have stepped in to cover. This is both in other houses and in his own. He seems quite happy with these arrangements, but just cannot be left alone.
Tiersen is a great traveller and loves the car, it’s the one place weather permitting, that he can be left by himself without getting stressed.
Tiersen’s owner would love to be able to keep him with her, but she knows that it’s very upsetting for him to be left if arrangements for his care fall through which happened recently, leaving him very distressed.
Ideally if there was someone in the Swansea area who could help especially with his care on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday usually once a month, that she has to travel for work, or even someone who would enjoy sharing such a kind, loving fella in his twilight years that would be absolutely perfect. But if not we could be looking to find gorgeous Tiersen a new home with people around constantly.
